The University of Birmingham School of Sports Science recently organised several cake sales on University of Birmingham's campus to raise funds for St Basils as part of their Mental Skills Training (MST) programme.
Dr Sam Cooley who is part of the research team who masterminded the MST programme said:
"We always do a cake sale with young people as part of our MST programme. It helps the young people develop their skills in teamwork, such as how to communicate effectively, allocate roles, and share responsibilities, as well as their organisational skills in areas such as budgeting, planning, and monitoring progress. Many of the young people who took part uncovered hidden strengths and their confidence grew throughout the cake sale".
"In the past we have held the cake sales to raise funds for other charities, but these young people wanted the money to go to St Basils. It was their suggestion"
"To add a bit of extra competition we thought we'd see which team could raise the most. So we did 3 cake sales in total in August 2015 with different groups of young people. Almost £400 was raised in total with the team of young people from Bromsgrove and Redditch raising the most!"
