tomato and st basils soup week

This is a great challenge for restaurants and cafes to get involved in. All you have to do is make and sell Tomato and Basil soup and then send the proceeds (or a percentage of the proceeds) into us.

If your establishment offers hot food anyway, it's a really simple way to help us whilst raising awareness of our work to prevent youth homelessness in the West Midlands and where young people can get help.

Solihull SleepOut

This SleepOut challenge is modelled on our BIG SleepOut but raises money just for our services in the Solihull area.

It takes place under the covered carpark of the Renewal Church on Lode Lane and whilst still cold does afford some protection from the elements. It's a good one to start off on if you're new to SleepOut!

SleepOut is essentially a challenge to sleep out overnight in a cardboard box and plastic sheeting and everyone concerned about homelessness should try it at least once. It's a good reminder of what we're all trying to prevent becoming a reality for people night after night and why services to prevent homelessness are so important.

However this is a fundraising event and we are not trying to emulate the conditions rough sleepers may experience; Participants are required to bring outside sleeping bags, blankets and wear warm clothing. The evening also includes entertainment and competitions and hot food and drinks are available to purchase in the evening and a free breakfast is provided the following morning. Toilets are available through-out the night.

You'll be able to register for this free event from January at the latest by visiting the dedicated page on our website.

ST Basils annual team walk challenge

St Basils Walk is usually held on the Saturday closest to the longest day of the year.

It is a team challenge to navigate a circular route and there are several different routes on offer of varying miles (max length the equivalent of a marathon). An ordnance survey map section and guide with printed photos of the route is provided to each team. The format is the same every year but the location is different. The walks are always designed to include the key features of the area and stunning views are assured! We're also of the opinion that a great walk should always include a great pub so always try to ensure at least one of the checkpoints en route is based at a good quality pub!

We usually have around 100 teams take part, with many of the same teams returning year after year. This challenge is popular with many businesses as well as hiking groups and friends/ families with older children who enjoy walking.

Those taking part regularly know this is a well-organised event with marshalled checkpoints, refreshment stops and toilet facilities and first aid and further help available if needed.

You can usually register for this event from early January though the date of the next one is usually publicised a year in advance so you can 'save the date'. There is a cost to take part but per person it works out a lot cheaper than most comparable events.

New information for the next challenge will be available from early January: www.stbasils.org.uk/walk

AUTUMN

Bike for St Basils

Bike for St Basils is available to everyone who has their own bike.

You can expect all the great organisation that we are known for from our other events, checkpoints along the way, a 'broom wagon' behind, combined with a 50 mile circular route through gorgeous countryside, or alternatively a 9 mile beinners/ family route. Both routes are along tarmacked roads so are suitable for road bikes. Children under 12 go free when accompanied by a paying adult.

You'll be able to register for this event from July: www.stbasils.org.uk/bikeforstbasils

coventry sleepout

This SleepOut challenge is modelled on our BIG SleepOut but raises money just for our services in the Coventry area.

It is a sponsored challenge to Sleep outside overnight in a cardboard box protected by plastic sheeting.

It's a good reminder of what we're all trying to prevent becoming a reality for people night after night and why services to prevent homelessness are so important.

However this is a fundraising event and although a challenge we are not aiming to emulate fully the conditions experienced by some rough sleepers. Participants are required to bring outside sleeping bags, blankets and wear warm waterproof clothing. The evening also includes entertainment and competitions and hot food and drinks are available to purchase in the evening and a free breakfast is provided the following morning. Toilets are available through-out the event and security patrol the site through-out the night to ensure it is safe.

You'll be able to register for this free event from July at the latest by visiting the dedicated page on our website: www.stbasils.org.uk/covsleepout

streetsmart

Streetsmart logoStreetsmart is a national fundraising campaign giving customers eating out in the run up to Christmas the opportunity to donate £1 to a local homelessness charity (In Birmingham this is St Basils) by adding an optional £1 to their bill.

We are lucky to have some of the best local restaurants participating in this initiative but we are always on the look out for more restaurants willing to assist us in this way. The only criteria is that the restaurant must have table service.

For more information with no obligation please email Fundraising Officer Anne Morton via fundraising@stbasils.org.uk

The big birmingham sleepout

This is the original SleepOut (being over 25 years old) and the biggest one we're aware of in Birmingham (attended by at least 400 people every year).

Our smaller local SleepOuts (in Coventry and Solihull) are modelled on this event which attracts hundreds of local people every year, all willing to volunteer to take part in this sponsored challenge to help raise vitally needed funds to prevent youth homelessness across the West Midlands.

As with all our SleepOuts the evening includes entertainment and an optional competition to take part in, which will keep you warm and busy whilst you're building your dwelling for the night and could be a good team building exercise for your group. The competition is called the Jaffabox Creative Cardboard Competition and encourages you to pool your groups cardboard ration and create something a bit more creative. Extra materials are also allowed.

BIG SleepOut is a fundraising event and although a challenge we are not aiming to emulate rough sleeping. Participants are required to bring outside sleeping bags, blankets and wear warm clothing. Hot food and drinks are available to purchase on the night and a free breakfast is provided the following morning. Toilets are available through-out the event and security patrol the site through-out the night to ensure it is safe.

All participants will receive a certificate of achievement.

City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra's 'festive favourites' concert

This evening concert is usually held on one of the last few working days before Christmas and is a great one to get you in the festive mood! It features some well known festive classics played and performed by the CBSO and their various choirs as well as opportunities for the audience to sing along to some popular Christmas Carols.  A celebrity host adds further festive cheer with amusing readings, jokes and anecdotes at intervals throughout the evening.

The CBSO kindly grant us tickets to sell to this event and we also offer a hospitality package.  For an upfront fee of £10 (paid when tickets are purchased) supporters can enjoy mulled wine (or soft drinks/ tea and coffee) and mince pies before the show and ice creams in the interval in a special VIP area.

After the performance the CBSO also kindly allow us to collect voluntary donations from all the audience on the doors.

It may seem a little early but information and tickets are available from August and we have to return any unsold tickets by mid October. See http://www.stbasils.org.uk/cbso for more information or contact Fundraising Officer Anne Morton by calling 0121 772 9619 or emailing fundraising@stbasils.org.uk.

bake for st basils

You can take part in this fundraising initiative at any time of the year to suit you.

You could hold a bake sale, bake off or cake auction to help raise much-needed funds for St Basils to help homeless young people.

We can send you a pack with posters, info and other items to help you get started and organise your event.

Depending on what time of year you hold it, you could have a themed event such as Easter (March/ April), a Mad Hatter's Tea Party (July), Halloween (October) or Christmas (December).

This is a great one for children or young people to get involved in but equally we have a lot of local businesses hosting their own inter-office bake-off competitions and auctions.

For more information see www.stbasils.org.uk/bakeforstbasils

And finally....

Don't forget to take your Basil Bear to all these fundraising events! He loves to get out and about and be seen. He loves to be in selfies and he adores the limelight! And if you're a bit camera shy he'll happily take your place!

If you don't have a Basil Bear you can get one posted out to you for free (as long as you promise to take him out and about).
